Big changes coming in the OHA
« Thread Started on Apr 5, 2006, 1:00am »

After accomplishing all they could at the Junior B level ( ::)) the Orangeville Crushers are set to move up one more rung to Junior A next year.

Tuesday's Stratford Beacon-Herald says the Crushers have been approved for entry by a majority of the Tier II league's teams and just need final approval from the OHA, although that is by no means a slam dunk.

As well, other papers say half the Junior D league has applied to move up to Junior C. The nine teams in question are Lambeth, Belmont, Mount Brydges, Thamesford, West Lorne, Lucan, Mitchell, Exeter and North Middlesex (Parkhill). It's not clear yet whether they would all move up together and form a new league or whether they would be split among the Great Lakes, Niagara and Western leagues.

And the Woodstock Navy Vets are also considering a future move up to Junior B. Rather than stay in the Niagara region, though, they want to get into the Mid-Western league because their minor teams play in the Alliance with Cambridge, Stratford, Brantford, etc.

Thoughts? My first one is that Orangeville should be forced back into Junior C, not allowed to move up. I've seen teams win more games in a weekend than Orangeville has won in the past three years combined.

Let the Junior D teams come up but divide them up and strengthen the existing leagues. For example, allowing Lucan, Exeter and Mitchell into the Western league would give it nine teams. However, since Exeter and Mitchell are both called the Hawks that would be very confusing with Walkerton in the same loop.

What does everyone else think?

I was asked about the Hawks(2) playing in the Western, Exeter and Mitchell. I said to the individual that they are always a good team at 'D' and have faired quite well in the Shootout at the Plex and the Wingham(Wiarton) Tourney. There was also talk at the April Fools Day Tourny in Milton this past weekend about Mitchell joining the 'C' so word is getting around. Somebody mentioned to me that Exeter and Mitchell have both already applied to play 'C'. Just means a little more travelling.

How about this one. Meaford was looking at buying the Hawks a few years back. They are trying to get a 'C' team there. Anybody else hear this one?

theres obviosuly a reason behind orangeville doing this......they have pretty solid hockey people involved in the team now.....not sure who it is (Hawerchuck maybe???)........anyways It probably has alot to do with the losing out on players in their area who leave to play tier 2. Orangeville is too large of a population to go back to junior C....they had their time in C and dominated
as for the D teams moving up to C.......I have seen a few junior D games and talked to people on both sides and they say there is little difference between C and D except for the letter. Other than a couple of exceptions the teams are located in different areas then C and rely extremely heavily on local players (much like th emajority of C teams)

Orangeville may have a better shot at drawing better players if they go tier 2 , They certianly got some hockey people there now and a nice new facility I believe. That makes sense to me.
It is also my understanding their will be no "D" next year.I heard three teams will join the Western loop .[Lucan, Mitchell' Exeter] The rest of the teams I'm not sure about.

Meaford had a "d" team about 25 years ago. I've thought and wondered for the past few years why noone took any initiative over there to bring another junior team back . The closest team would be Stayner. Not sure if the Wiarton franchise is still available or not. Another one I heard was Mt Forest thinking about moving to Markdale. They also had a D team 25 years ago called the hawks. Anyone hear anything about that one?

all the d teams in the london area, rely on the city to draw college/university students from.imo theres only a couple d teams that would compete in c,teams will be fighting for players and next thing you know it will be more of a money game then what it is now, keep d as it is and maybe make an age change to allow it to be a development league for say 16yr olds, drop players aged 19 and 20 and 'force' them to play c,cuz c isnt too much more of a commitment then what d is

as for woodstock goin to jr b.....they have a hard enough time with c teams let alone b,their reasoning for goin to b is the fact that they lose players to b every yr,but what teams dont??it would be a short lived attempt if they did go b,and a big money loss as well

Woodstock could replace Alymer and make the Western League 10 teams again, or replace Orangeville and make the Mid-West 10 teams again, either way, they do belong as a Junior B town. Orangeville should have been a Tier 2 team years ago, seems like they would make better natural rivals with places like Newmarket and Aurora (although they would get smoked the first few years), than they would with Cambridge and Kitchener. Junior D should have been scrapped years ago, too. It only exists in the OHA. Walkerton could change back to the Blackhawks, Mitchell could become the Hicks, and Exeter can keep the Hawks. I just don't think that there will be 3 Hawks in the league, so something has to give.

hey rookie, are you willing to fork over the money to the Chicago Blackhawks every year for copyright fees. I know I wouldn't want to. That was the reason that Walkerton went to Hawks. Teams were copying the Blackhawks logo and name, than Chicago decided to make some money off and charge all teams a fee. If anything

I like Orangeville moving to Tier 2, their draw is so huge that they could make it work to their advantage... Plus that huge barn they have would make for some good hockey if the players were fast enough to suit it.

That's interesting news regarding the Jr. D league potentially folding... that could turn out to save the Western C league's bacon. Are they still thinking about moving some Georgian teams into the Western loop? From what I know, a few of the Georgian teams are really far apart from each other... (Then again, look at Goderich to Mount Forest.. and potentially Goderich to Meaford).
